Cork City's management teams are seeing significant changes as the club continues its dominant run in the League of Ireland First Division. The Echo and Irish Times reported this morning that All-Ireland winning coach Cian O'Neill has joined the Cork hurlers' setup, while the camogie side celebrates a recent championship win under Gemma O'Connor's guidance.

Ben O'Connor has recruited Cian O'Neill as a new coach for the Cork senior hurlers. O'Neill brings a wealth of inter-county experience, having worked with the Tipperary hurlers in 2010 and won All-Irelands as a coach with the Kerry footballers in 2014 and 2025. The Kildare native now works at Munster Technological University in Cork, and he previously trained O'Connor's club side, Newtownshandrum, to county and provincial titles.

His appointment follows other backroom changes. Performance coach Gerry Hussey has left, and selector Ronan Curran stepped away over the weekend. Curran told reporters that aligning thoughts on how to overcome challenges was difficult, even though everyone wanted the same outcome for Cork. O'Neill's football background is not seen as a major concern, given other successful hurling teams have incorporated coaches from Gaelic football.

Gemma O'Connor played a key role in Cork's surprise Glen Dimplex All-Ireland camogie championship victory less than three weeks ago. The 42 reported that O'Connor, a nine-time All-Ireland winner and record 11-time All-Star, joined the management team last year. She took on a larger coaching role after other mentors moved on, helping a transitional squad that had lost 14 players from 2025.

O'Connor recalled a challenging start, including a loss to Antrim in the league. She said that period allowed new players to find their feet and for the team to understand each other's strengths. The management focused on the championship as their main goal, and the players frequently credited O'Connor's motivational skills after dethroning Galway in the final.

On the football pitch, Cork City remain the clear leaders of the First Division. The Irish Independent covered their latest 2-0 win over Wexford FC at Turner's Cross on Friday. Goals from Cillian Murphy and Seani Maguire secured the three points, with goalkeeper Conor Brann making important saves.

The victory reinforces their commanding position. Cork City sit first with 67 points from 29 games, boasting a record of 21 wins, four draws, and four losses. They have scored 61 goals and conceded only 25, giving them a +36 goal difference and a 20-point lead over second-placed UCD. Their recent form reads three wins, one draw, and one loss from the last five matches.

The focus now shifts to upcoming fixtures and maintaining momentum. The Cork hurlers will integrate O'Neill's methods as they prepare for their next campaign. The camogie team will look to build on their All-Ireland success with O'Connor's influence.

For the football team, the next challenge is an away match against third-placed Bray Wanderers on September 4. This is a key fixture in the context of the title race, and fans can follow the team's schedule on our fixtures page.
