Ruari Keating scored a first-half hat-trick to lead Cork City to a commanding 5-1 victory over UCD at Turner's Cross on Friday night. The win reinforces the Leesiders' position at the summit of the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division, where they now hold a 19-point lead.

Keating's three goals arrived in a devastating eight-minute spell. He opened the scoring in the 16th minute, added a second four minutes later, and completed his treble from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. Sean Maguire then extended the advantage to 4-0 ten minutes later, capitalising on the dominant display.

UCD managed a consolation goal early in the second half when Hugh Smith converted a penalty. Maguire responded almost immediately, however, restoring the four-goal margin with his second of the night in the 52nd minute to seal the 5-1 result.

Post-match reaction

Ruari Keating expressed his satisfaction with the performance. "I'm delighted to get the hat-trick and help the team to such a convincing win," the striker said. His attacking partner, Sean Maguire, echoed the sentiment. "The goals came at the right time and we deserved the victory on the day," Maguire stated.

The result sees Cork City maintain their formidable league standing, sitting first with 68 points from 31 games. Their recent form shows two wins, two draws, and one loss from the last five outings.

Elsewhere in the First Division

In other Friday night action, Bray Wanderers strengthened their own playoff hopes with a 2-0 win over Treaty United at the Carlisle Grounds. Endri Mustali broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, assisted by Tyreik Sammy. Richard Ferizaji doubled the advantage six minutes later, with substitute Ethan Cheese providing the assist. The victory lifts Bray to second place and virtually secures their playoff position.

Longford Town claimed a 1-0 away win at Finn Harps thanks to a Dean Williams lob, while Wexford FC beat ten-man Cobh Ramblers. Athlone Town also secured three points with a victory over Kerry FC.

Cork City's attention now turns to a trip to face Longford Town on September 26th. Longford, currently sixth, were 4-3 winners when the sides last met in July.
