Cork City FC will clash with Cardiff City FC in a pre-season friendly on July 14th. The match will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Cork City FC has previously played Welsh clubs including Wrexham and Swansea City in friendly fixtures, while the club also enjoyed victory against Cwmbran Town AFC in 1993 in the then European Cup competition. Brian Barry-Murphy, the son of legendary Cork All-Ireland-winning Hurler and Gaelic Footballer Jimmy Barry-Murphy, will bring the Bluebirds home to Cork for the match. Barry-Murphy played for Cork City FC between 1995 and 1999 before moving to Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday and then spending the majority of his career at Bury. He finished his career at Rochdale, a club he later went on to manage between 2019 and 2021, before coaching under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and eventually becoming First Team Head Coach at Cardiff City FC. Éanna Buckley, Chief Operating Officer of Cork City FC, said, “We are delighted to welcome Cardiff City FC to Cork, and in particular Brian, back to where it all began for him here at Turners Cross. We would also like to congratulate Cardiff City on their recent promotion to the Championship. The match is sure to be a competitive fixture and a great test for both sides.” Kickoff is scheduled for 7.45 pm. Tickets are available from www.corkcityfc.ie.
