Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh Joins Northampton Town

Former Cork City player Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh has made a significant move to League Two side Northampton Town, signing a three-year contract. The 21-year-old midfielder, who had previously spent time in the under-21s, is now ready to establish himself as a regular senior player.

O’Brien-Whitmarsh, who joined Southampton from Cork City a couple of years ago, has been playing in the under-21s for a bit too long, according to the player himself. He is now excited to get going and is looking forward to the new challenge. The Republic of Ireland youth talent is determined to prove his worth at the senior level.

Moving to Northampton Town

The transfer to Northampton Town was confirmed on Monday, bringing an end to a spell that began when O’Brien-Whitmarsh joined from Cork City in January 2024. During his time with the Saints, he made two senior appearances, including his debut in the Carabao Cup in 2024, and featured in the FA Cup victory over Leicester. He also gained valuable experience at Accrington Stanley, making 13 appearances and scoring three goals during the 2024/25 campaign.

O’Brien-Whitmarsh was convinced by the manager, Chris Hogg, to join Northampton Town. "The gaffer was a major selling point for me," he said. "He spoke about what he wants from his teams and that aligns pretty well with me and my game."

The young midfielder is also excited about the security of the three-year deal and the opportunity to settle in. "I really enjoyed the game on Saturday. It was a good game to watch and I thought the boys played well and the fans were great. It was a really positive first impression," he added.

Pre-Season and Future

O’Brien-Whitmarsh spent pre-season with the first team and travelled with the squad to Germany for their training camp just weeks ago. He is now looking forward to making a positive impact at Northampton Town and helping the team achieve its goals. "I’m really looking forward to it. There’s also a bit of security with the three-year deal. That gives me a chance to settle," he said.

The move to Northampton Town marks a new chapter for Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh, who is eager to prove himself as a regular senior player and contribute to the team's success.
