Cork City will aim to extend their perfect head-to-head record against Athlone Town when the sides meet in the First Division this week. The league leaders travel to Lissywollen on Friday night having won all three meetings this season, including a 3-2 victory in August.
Tim Clancy's side sit first in the table with 71 points from 33 games, holding an 18-point advantage. Their recent form has been mixed, however, with a 2-1 loss away to Longford Town last Friday following a 5-1 home win over UCD.
Recent encounters and form
Athlone Town have lost their last two matches against Cork City and are seventh in the table. Their most recent outing was a 2-1 home win over Bray Wanderers at the end of August, but they lost the reverse fixture against City earlier that month. In the last meeting on 3 August, goals from Ruairi Keating and Sean Maguire secured a 3-2 away win for Cork City.
That result continued a dominant trend. City also won 3-0 at Athlone Town in May and 4-1 at Turner's Cross in March. The team that thrashed UCD 5-1 last month featured Cian Brann in goal, with Charlie McCann, Cian Murphy and Keating all starting in attack. Cork City face Athlone Town away on 2 October in their next First Division fixture.
