Kerry FC's Rise to Glory
Kerry FC, the newest club in the League of Ireland, has made a significant impact since its formation. Co-founded by Billy Dennehy, a former player with Cork City and Shamrock Rovers, the club has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. In their third season, they managed to reach the FAI Cup semi-finals, a remarkable achievement that showcases their potential and dedication.
Dennehy, who was once a top player in the League of Ireland before moving to England, returned to his roots to help build Kerry FC. He explains, 'Before Kerry FC was formed and I was managing the (Kerry District League) Under-19s, I offered our players to other League of Ireland clubs.' This approach has paid off, as several of these players, including Ronan Teahan and Sean McGrath, have remained with Kerry FC since the club's inception.
The Path to Success
Dennehy's journey to founding Kerry FC wasn't always on his radar. After retiring from playing, he wasn't initially focused on building a new club. However, his involvement with the Under-17s team and the success of Evan Ferguson in an Under-17s match at Mounthawk Park changed his perspective. The 3,000-strong crowd for that game was a significant moment that led him to believe Kerry needed a League of Ireland team.
The process of forming Kerry FC was challenging but rewarding. Dennehy and his team faced a mountain of work, including securing the necessary approvals from the League of Ireland and the FAI. Once they received confirmation in November 2022, they had just three months to put everything in place. Despite the workload, the team remained committed and focused on their goals.
The club's success is not just about the on-field achievements. It's also about the community engagement and the support network that has been built. Dennehy emphasizes, 'It’s about people in all different areas - the academy, the men’s and women’s sides, the volunteers, Football For All; there are so many people involved and that brings more than just the sporting element to the club.'
Kerry FC's journey is a testament to the power of passion, hard work, and community support. As the club continues to grow, it remains committed to providing local players with opportunities and giving back to the community.
