Martin O'Donoghue, Cork City's play strategist and head of play development for Let’s Play Cork, is transforming the city through giant games. Since 2017, his work has turned underused spaces like Blackpool's underpass and Bishop Lucey Park into vibrant playgrounds. The initiative, inspired by Italy's Playful Paradigm, uses life-sized Connect Four and Giant Jenga to bring people together. O'Donoghue's projects, including the UpDown Circus Festival in September, blend contemporary circus with accessible play, offering free events for all ages. The festival, running on Cornmarket St and Douglas St, will feature interactive installations like juggle boards and hula hoops, creating shared experiences in Cork City.
